The LinkedIn Community is full of caring people that want to lean in and uplift others. No money was lost, and he learned a valuable lesson about identifying scams and not giving in to that knee-jerk reaction the scammers want you to have. He took a closer look and realized that the person who "reported" him and the "Steam support rep" both sounded the same in their communications, and he reached out to actual Steam support to get his account back (the scammer had gotten in and locked him out of his own account). I talked him off the ledge, and we looked at the email (came from a most definitely not Steam email address), at how Steam support would communicate with you if there was a legitimate issue (not on a Discord server), and we discussed the fact that Steam will never ask you to send them a gift card code. My older son called me one day, freaking out because someone had contacted him saying they'd accidentally reported his Steam account as problematic and "someone else" contacted him, purportedly from Steam, saying he needed to go to a particular site, buy a $100 Steam card and send the code in, and then his account would be unlocked. (This is when I met him) I imagine he was experiencing the sting of regret, the pain of loss, the anger of betrayal, and the fear of not having what he thought he did. He was then mad at everyone who crossed his path because he was out hundreds of dollars and out of a ‘job’. Immediately after purchasing them & sending them over, he found out it was a scam. This all happened to him through LinkedIn by the way. He was furious- he had just been hired for a new remote job and his new boss asked him to buy some google play gift cards for some urgent tech thing. I met a gentleman a few days ago while running errands.
